Treatment of mebomian gland dysfunction

TREATMENT OF MEIBOMIAN GLAND DYSFUNCTION

Eye dryness can affect anyone. It can be characterized by fluctuating blurred vision, mucus around the eyes, excessive tearing (like crying), red eye or eye strain. Having dry eyes is sometimes painless, but most often it causes irritation, a mild burning sensation, tingling or even itching.

There are several solutions for remedying dry eyes :

Eyelid massage

An effective technique - when practiced regularly, but some may find it a little constraining. A 10-minute session, performed every morning and evening, can lead to satisfactory results. Massaging your eyelids helps them to empty the accumulated ‘meibum’ (an oily substance that prevents evaporation of the eye's tear film). It is worth noting, however, that the eyelids are fragile and it is necessary to respect the recommendations of your ophthalmologist.

LipiFlow- An Innovative Treatment

LipiFlow Technology, developed by the American company Tear Science, presents a major advance in the treatment of dry eyes.

A single session of LipiFlow treatment makes it possible to stop the need of 6 months’ worth of eyelid massages.

The application of controlled heat to the inner surface of the eyelid as well as a massage of the external surface allows the Meibomian glands to start working properly again. Treatment is quick (around 10 minutes) and painless.

Scientific studies show that one session is beneficial for between 6 and 12 months.

The results of a long-term follow-up study of patients treated with LipiFlow were published at the American Congress of ASCRS in April 2015, and were presented at the SFO Congress, with results showing that: 86% of patients treated with LipiFlow were still significantly improved 12 months later.
